Settling into fall with some new friends

This past week at Friendly House, the After Schoolers have gotten to make best use of the rainy and colder weather by doing cozy projects and meeting some new friends. The Brentano Building got to have their first monthly visit from the Catlin Gable Reading Buddies, a group of top-notch high school students who self-organized to come read with the little guys. We are so impressed by this group of responsible, friendly teenagers, and it’s clear that the Brentano kids are too! Take my word for it, they were enthralled. I’ve never seen so many kids completely engaged by books in one room!

Also, the kids in Food, Film and Falafel: Welcome to the Middle East Club got to learn a new dance! Some friendly local folk dancers taught them the Mayim, a Near East dance for finding water in the desert. See photos below.

And, finally, the most amazing card castles you’ve ever seen!

But first, the HEROES OF THE WEEK!

  • From Maia’s room, “Nori and Daniel both finished their homework on Tuesday (the first day of Homework Club, since there was no school on Monday)–and they both finished before Homework Club ended, giving them plenty of time to read fun books.”

…AND…

  • “A new student was feeling a little shy after joining us just last week, but Sadie Claire has helped her feel welcome and included with laughter and imaginative play.” Nori, Daniel and Sadie Claire, YOU ARE ALL ROCK STARS!

…AND…!!

  • From Anna’s 1st grade classroom, “Sylvie offered her extra coat to a coat-less kid so that he could play outside with the rest of his classmates (and not be freezing).” Sylvie, what a friendly gesture!
