About

Purpose. Our program is a full service after-school program designed to meet the Chapman School Community’s need for high-quality, affordable school-age care. With our sliding fee scale and scholarship opportunities, we create an inclusive environment for enrichment, recreation, and social development. In the summer, After School becomes Summer Camp, a theme-based day camp for families from throughout the Portland metro area.

What We Do. This program engages children in age-appropriate enrichment activities such as art, science, homework help, sports, field trips, and free-choice time. Children also have the opportunity to participate in clubs like LEGO Math, Messy Art, Gardening, and Music at no additional cost for families.  Our program has a 12:1 child to teacher ratio. The program and its qualified and dedicated staff are certified by the Child Care Division of Oregon’s Employment Department.

Classrooms.  Friendly House After School occupies five classrooms and has access to two gymnasiums and Wallace Park!  Classrooms are mostly blended age groups.  The kindergarten and most of the first graders are located in the Brentano Building, have smaller class sizes and access to the back play yard.  The Crawford Building, has three blended age classrooms.  Friendly House staff take age, development and personality into account when placing kids in each room.

Staff. Our staff are all certified in CPR, First Aid and Severe Allergic Reaction Training (we are trained to administer EpiPens if necessary) and have passed a federal background check.  All have experience with the school age group and we hire staff that have the enthusiasm and skill set to engage students.  Many have professional teaching experience.  For staff bios, please visit the Meet Our Staff page.
